20% Carbon

After having a play around with Kayak I got thinking it would be a good idea to build a site around travel that allows people to see the carbon emitted for their trip and ways in which they could balance it out. There could be calculation tools and instant feedack to the user depending on which options were chosen, for example if they chose to go from London via Paris to Cyprus then the flight would be cheaper but may be a higher polluter than going straight there or the benefits of using the new A380 Airbus which is more fuel efficient.

This idea could be extended to show how businesses and individuals can bring down their carbon emissions, with simple calculation tools, sliders, and all being presented back in an info graphic easy to use way. It would be the place to go to find out how you and your friends and colleagues could live a more sustainable lifestyle.

This idea may even support a community around it where users can save their carbon emissions and work over time to bring them down. It could contain some larger editorial features, such as Virgin Blue offering its customers to pay an extra dollar a trip to become carbon neutral malcolmturnbull

I don’t think the site should be totally focussed around air travel, it should be more based on lifestyle, so if I only fly once a year but I drive 10 miles to work everyday then looking at ways I could offset the emissions from my car maybe more important. Perhaps there could be different levels of offset, ie, one extreme could be to buy an electric car. another option could see if there is anyone in my company that lives locally that I could buddy up with for a lift – plus saving on petrol!

if anyone is interested in pushing this (basic) idea forward then let me know – we may also need a mathematician to work out the calculations!

  1. love this idea Dave, its becoming more apparent that people are concerned and having not only a site to facilitate knowledge but with a community etc would be great….

i did have an idea to add but i got distracted about an not at all important email…..i’ll rack me brains

  2. great, I think the community would work around this idea too. I also envisage a dashboard type interface where adjusting different dials and sliders etc would recalculate your tons / kilos / grams of carbon – it could become quite a nice little educational piece too…

  3. Was lookng at Walkit ( with Jack and Spencer yesterday. On the results page they show how much CO2 would be avoided if you walk compared with other forms of transport
